My First Secondment at FAU

Image
Collaboration! Collaboration has always been an element that I have been enthusiastic about. For this reason, I am thankful to POEMA for providing the opportunity to create international networks which I believe to be extremely valuable.                                 I started my secondment at Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen ( FAU ) under the supervision of Professor Michael Stingl in order to have close collaboration with Arefeh, ESR12, from the 1 st   of October to the end of December 2020. I had some regular face to face meetings with Prof. Stingl and Arefeh at least one time per week. Also, I kept having online meetings with Prof. Kočvara and some joint meetings between FAU and UoB every week.                                    To give a general overview of our recent research topics; we are using different approaches for solving large-and-sparse low-rank linear Semidefinite Programs (SDPs). These approaches use Interior-Point (IP) method in UoB and Primal-Dual Penalty

One Year Full of Great Experiences

When I think about the year that has passed, I cannot believe how much experience I have gained, both academically and personally. For sure, POEMA played the main role in making these changes happen.  During the first few months of my PhD, I was mostly busy with courses. In fact, UoB requires every PhD student to collect 50 ECTS credits so I chose some taught modules offered by the School of Mathematics that were closest to my research project.  I had four 10 credit PhD courses in Conic Optimization, Nonlinear Programming, Heuristic optimization and Multicriteria decision making which developed my knowledge in these areas. As well as these courses, I was attending talks in the weekly UoB seminar 'Optimization and Numerical Analysis' with topics in Optimization area, before starting working from home due to the unfortunate pandemic situation. Since then, I have had regular meetings with my supervisor, Professor Michal Kočvara, who has worked closely with me and continued to help

POEMA 1st workshop- Florence

Image
My experience at the 1st POEMA Workshop  in the stunning city of Florence from 15-17 January 2020 is completed now. Days of courses and talks by the greatest experts in the fields of Algebra, Algebraic Geometry and Optimization. It was also included face-to-face meetings, discussion, reflection and knowledge sharing with other ESRs with brilliant minds and ideas. The workshop was an incredible opportunity that helped me to get involved, improving my research, gaining new ideas and upgrading my skills. Glad to have been part of such a dynamic and high-level environment. I am totally ready for the next steps. POEMA 1st Workshop at the  University of Florence . With my fellow ESRs in front of Cathedral de Santa Maria del Fiore.

POEMA Kick-off & Recruitment event

My first meeting with POEMA project team… Undoubtedly, attending the Kick-off Meeting and Recruitment Event  of POEMA project on 25th of April 2019 in Paris was a great experience and opportunity for me, it was the opening of my new adventure in academia. A day full of mixed feelings, excitement, curiosity and stress of course. Presentations about the activities planned within the project and the introduction of the ESRs positions by advisors gave me the chance to have a great view of other positions as well. I had a short presentation about my background and academic experiences, and I had a chance to have an individual interview with my advisor Prof. Michal Kocvara and Prof. Michael Stingl. Ind e ed, it was stressful for me, but a friendly and respectful environment helped me to be confident and express myself better. Thankfully, I seized the opportunity ;). It is an honour and a privilege to be part of this professional team and work with the greatest professors

Introduction

Hello! J This is Soodeh Habibi, ESR13. I’m a PhD student at the University of Birmingham ( UoB ). My research topic is ' Algorithms and Software for Structured Semidefinite Optimization'  and I am working under the supervision of Professor Michal Kocvara. As a part of my research program, I have the chance to work with great experts in the field, at Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen and IBM Research in Dublin. In this blog, I am describing my research life and sharing my experiences. With ' Old Joe ' at the UoB campus.
